LOS ANGELES — A bicoastal staff meeting of the Weinstein Company was hastily convened late Thursday. Staff members were scared and shaken after public complaints of sexual harassment against Harvey Weinstein, the entertainment company’s pugnacious co-founder. With the help of a video conferencing system, David Glasser, the Weinstein Company’s president and chief operating officer, tried to rally the troops.

“We are going to be O.K.,” two people who attended the meeting recalled Mr. Glasser saying. He said his door was open to anyone who wanted to talk and encouraged everyone to stay focused on scheduled films.

The problem: For all intents and purposes, there is no Weinstein Company apart from Mr. Weinstein, who has announced an “indefinite” leave of absence following a New York Times investigation that found at least eight settlements paid to women who complained that he sexually harassed them. Without Mr. Weinstein, this studio, already struggling at the box office and hobbled by an exodus of senior staff members in recent years, is in serious trouble.

The movie and television company’s other founder and co-chairman, Bob Weinstein, has a substantial track record running Dimension Films, a label dedicated to horror movies and family fare, like the “Spy Kids” franchise. Mr. Glasser, sometimes referred to in Hollywood as the third Weinstein brother, is an experienced executive. But Harvey Weinstein is the one who called — or screamed — the shots, often pushing the company forward by sheer force of will.

“Without Harvey actively managing, the Weinstein Company will become even more capital constrained — tougher to find funding,” Harold L. Vogel, a media analyst and the author of the book “Entertainment Industry Economics,” wrote in an email on Friday. Even without a crisis, Mr. Vogel noted, the studio’s “business model doesn’t function as well as it once did.”

The Weinstein Company’s board had a heated meeting on Thursday night. On Friday, three members of the board — Marc Lasry, Dirk Ziff and Tim Sarnoff — resigned, according to a board member and a company executive. In a statement, Bob Weinstein and three other board members said that a group of lawyers from Debevoise & Plimpton, including one with experience prosecuting sex crimes, would lead an investigation into Harvey Weinstein’s behavior.

“As Harvey has said, it is important for him to get professional help for the problems he has acknowledged,” the statement said. “Next steps will depend on Harvey’s therapeutic progress, the outcome of the board’s independent investigation and Harvey’s own personal decisions.”

The Weinstein brothers first came to prominence with Miramax in 1989, the year they helped to activate the indie-film boom with “Sex, Lies and Videotape.” They sold Miramax to Disney in 1993 and left in 2005 to form the Weinstein Company. They unsuccessfully dabbled in side businesses, including a fashion label, but eventually found their film footing with releases like “Inglourious Basterds.”

Lately they have hit a dry spell. Although they have a fast-growing television division, the Weinsteins have not had a mainstream hit at the North American box office since 2013, when “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” took in $116.6 million.

So far this year, the Weinstein Company, a boutique studio that specializes in sophisticated, small-budget dramas like the 2011 Oscar winner “The King’s Speech,” has released six films, which have taken in a combined $123 million at the domestic box office. (The biggest hit has been “Wind River,” a well-reviewed murder mystery that has collected about $33 million.) Last year, the Weinsteins had seven films, with combined ticket sales of just $65 million.

To compare, major studios like Warner Bros. and the Walt Disney Company generally take in $1 billion to $2.5 billion annually at the domestic box office.

The Weinstein Company has also found itself sidelined at film festivals, where Mr. Weinstein has long shopped for movies to release, helping to discover auteurs like Quentin Tarantino and Steven Soderbergh. For years at the Sundance Film Festival, for instance, his wallet was the only one that mattered to agents, who would track his team relentlessly. Netflix and Amazon dominate now.

At the same time, a new cluster of independent movie companies — some better financed and with more contemporary sensibilities — arrived on the scene. They include A24, which released the reigning Oscar winner for best picture, “Moonlight,” and Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures, which has emerged as a favorite home for the kind of rebel filmmakers that Mr. Weinstein used to have to himself.

Ms. Ellison, whose films include “American Hustle” and “Zero Dark Thirty,” has been one of the few Hollywood executives willing to comment about the accusations against Mr. Weinstein. “Women face serious repercussions for sharing their experiences and deserve our full support,” she wrote on Twitter on Thursday, with a link to the Times report. “I admire the courage of these women.”

Mr. Weinstein acknowledged in a statement on Thursday that his behavior had “caused a lot of pain” and vowed to “do better.” On Friday, a lawyer advising him, Lisa Bloom, said in a television appearance that he had acted inappropriately and agreed with an interviewer who characterized Mr. Weinstein’s reported actions as illegal. And on Saturday, Ms. Bloom said that she had resigned as an adviser to Mr. Weinstein.

Mr. Weinstein’s power in Hollywood has always come with his ability to capitalize on the Academy Awards. He was at his height in the late 1990s, when he drove films like “Shakespeare in Love” to best-picture wins and huge ticket sales. Even in his more recent diminished state, he remained a player, prodding a tiny, largely subtitled art film, “Lion,” to six nominations this year. (The last time a Weinstein film was a force at the Oscars was in 2012, when “The Artist” collected five awards, including best picture.)

In this year’s Oscars cycle, the company’s big hopes are “Wind River” and “The Current War,” a period drama about the rivalry between Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse that is scheduled for a late November release. It received a tepid response at last month’s Toronto International Film Festival, but Mr. Weinstein has personally helped to re-edit the movie since then.

Several agents and producers said that, without Mr. Weinstein’s all-or-nothing campaigning style, those films would probably be stranded on the awards trail.

As the movie business has become more difficult, the Weinsteins have found success in television, especially the reality genre, with Heidi Klum’s “Project Runway.” That series runs on Lifetime, a division of A&E Networks, and has spawned several spinoffs.

Series in development include a crime drama for Amazon starring Robert De Niro and Julianne Moore and created by the director of “Silver Linings Playbook,” David O. Russell. The Weinstein Company is also working with Oliver Stone on a series for Showtime called “Guantánamo.” It has three major projects with the Viacom-owned Paramount Network, including “Yellowstone,” a drama starring Kevin Costner and written by Taylor Sheridan, the writer-director behind “Wind River.”

Amazon, Showtime, A&E and Paramount all declined to comment about Mr. Weinstein on Friday or did not respond to queries. Ms. Klum, Mr. Sheridan and other people involved with Weinstein Company films and shows responded similarly.

One prominent agent, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he did not want to draw his company into the controversy, said that he would advise female clients against withdrawing from Weinstein projects. He quickly added, however, that he would also tell them to ask for a contract saying that they would have zero contact with Harvey Weinstein.

Jacob Tremblay is set to co-star alongside Peter Dinklage in Legendary’s “Toxic Avenger” film, a reboot of Troma Entertainment’s 1984 low-budget action-comedy splatter film.

The reboot will follow a mild-mannered janitor at a health club who’s pushed out of a second-story window by bullies into a vat of toxic waste. The chemicals cause him to transform into a hideously deformed mutant gifted with superhuman size and strength. He must go from shunned outcast to underdog hero as he races to save his son, his friends and his community from the forces of corruption and greed.

The original film generated four sequels: “The Toxic Avenger Part II,” “The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie” and “Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV.” The franchise expanded into an animated children’s TV series spin-off called “Toxic Crusaders,” a musical stage production and a Marvel comic book series.

Making his film debut as Blue in 2013’s “The Smurfs 2,” Tremblay quickly became one of Hollywood’s go-to young actors. He received a SAG nomination for his breakout performance in “Room,” which earned co-star Brie Larson an Academy Award for best actress. Tremblay also starred in “Wonder,” “The Book of Henry,” “Good Boys” and “Doctor Sleep.” He will voice the titular character in Pixar’s upcoming film “Luca,” as well as Flounder in Disney’s live-action adaptation of “The Little Mermaid.”

Legendary Entertainment acquired the rights to the “Toxic Avenger” franchise in 2018 and announced that a new film was in development. The studio brought on producers Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz of Troma Entertainment, who both produced the original 1984 comedy. Macon Blair, who made his directorial debut in 2017 with the Netflix comedy “I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore,” was tapped to direct and write the reboot.

Tremblay is repped by UTA, Play Management & Jackoway Austen.

Deadline first reported the news.

Our interview is a reunion of sorts for actors Celia Au (Wu Assassins) and Ludi Lin (Mortal Kombat). Although they both star in Ximan “Mandy” Li’s In a New York Minute, Au and Lin really only share one scene together. Set in New York, the romance drama follows the intersecting storylines of three different Asian-American women as they navigate life and love in the big city: Amy (Amy Chang) is a food journalist who, fresh from a break-up, finds herself unable to eat or enjoy food; Angel (Yi Liu) is a budding actress who is unhappily married to an older and wealthy businessman (Erik Lochtefeld); and Nina is a young woman who works as an escort in order to support herself and save enough to finally escape the family that has been unkind towards her. Au leads the film’s third storyline as Nina, while Lin plays David, the young writer with whom Angel has a passionate affair.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“We have a bunch of mutual friends,” says Au of Lin. “I remember when [Ludi and I] first met, we were like, ‘Hey, I’ve heard about you! Nice to finally meet you in person.'” Similarly, Lin recalled immediately “hitting it off” with Au. “We met on this film, and I think there’s something really, really deep in that no matter where we are or where we’re brought up, we share the same fundamental culture, and that comes from our roots.” Indeed, Lin was born in Fuzhou, China before moving to Hong Kong when he was three, whereas Au was born in Hong Kong. What’s more, both emigrated early in their childhood — Lin, to Australia for boarding school and then Vancouver for university; Au, to Brooklyn when she was three-and-a-half.

The immigrant experience is at the forefront of In a New York Minute, with each character navigating the mercurial scale of identity that inherently comes with being an immigrant, no matter where you’re from. “It doesn’t matter if you’re from Italy or Spain, [I think] as long as English isn’t your first language, you will run into the same problems,” Au says of the film’s nuanced depiction of things like language barriers or the struggle to adapt. “So, I kind of think: just because we’re Asian characters, it doesn’t make it an Asian film. It’s pretty universal because of [its] immigrant storyline.”

In a New York Minute Offers Much-Needed Asian Representation

“We see a lot of Asian comedies and Asian action films. There’s not [a lot] of Asian dramas that focus on female characters, their lives, and the struggles they go through,” says Au of, as she puts it, “mainstream” films about Asian characters. Of course, the last handful of years has seen a tremendous push forward by Asian-led movies and TV series in the mainstream in North America. Just last year, Squid Game became one of Netflix’s best original series, and, now, Everything Everywhere All at Once is already looking like one of 2022’s best movies. While the latter does spotlight its women characters, the film is still action-heavy. This isn’t a bad thing, but Au does make a good point about a lack of Asian representation in grounded dramas.

That is perhaps what’s most remarkable about In a New York Minute: it approaches its characters’ lives with a sensitivity that shines Asian and Asian-American characters in a light that isn’t often seen. In fact, the movie immediately brings to mind Lulu Wang’s The Farewell and Wayne Wang’s The Joy Luck Club, weaving through the quotidian existence of belonging to two different cultures and, at the same time, feeling like you don’t belong anywhere at all. “Growing up, you always think that you’re the only one that’s experiencing these things,” says Lin of how his own nomadic history brought with it a set of struggles related to identity. “That’s why the film medium is such a good way to unify people in their experiences and know that you’re not alone.”

Positive Shifts in the Industry

Historically, Hollywood movies and TV shows often only ever featured one Asian character — if at all — on-screen. As such, older generations of Asian-American actors know all too well the feeling of either playing roles that weren’t culturally specific and that purposefully avoided discussions of race, or being the only Asian person in a room, at best. These are experiences, in fact, that Sandra Oh spoke openly about with Kerry Washington on Variety‘s Actors on Actors special in 2020. At worst, as a study by Geena Davis Institute found (via NBC News), Asian characters were often inserted to serve solely as the punchline of a joke. Fortunately, there’s been recent, positive shifts in the industry, which both Au and Lin can attest to.

“I remember, when I first started in the industry, I was one of the only Asian people on set, [between the] crew and cast,” says Au. “My closest friends right now are people I’ve met on set, and it was like, ‘Oh, you’re Asian, let’s be friends’ [because] there was only a handful of us. In the last five years or so, that dynamic has changed completely changed.” Indeed, back in 2019, Au starred in Netflix’s series Wu Assassins, playing one of the titular assassins, Ying Ying. Just like In a New York Minute, Wu Assassins featured a predominantly Asian and Asian-American cast and crew. “It’s great to feel like [in a space with other Asian people] everyone has an understanding of our culture.”

“I also think that, as much as we’ve made progress in the last few years, there needs to be more exposure,” says Lin of the need to not “sit on our laurels” when it comes to pushing for more (and better) opportunities and representation in the industry. “Where [In a New York Minute] is different from projects like Mortal Kombat, like Wu Assassins, and other studio-backed films, is that Mandy is a first-time director. She’s a new voice. […] It’s time for us to explore new talents.”

In a New York Minute is available on digital on May 3, 2022.

Sam Heughan has opened up about his new memoir ‘Waypoints’ and told fans he wants to take them on a personal journey of his life.

‘Waypoints’ will be published by Radar and will follow Sam as he makes his way along the West Highland Way to reflect on the personal waypoints that define him.

Sharing a snap from his journey on Instagram, Sam wrote: “Ready to come on this journey with me?

“I wanted to write a memoir with a difference. Waypoints takes you on a personal journey through my life, whilst I walk 100miles through the Highlands of Scotland. Excited and nervous. I can’t wait to share with you my new adventure!”

And fans expressed their excitement for the brand new memoir.

One said: “I am really looking forward to this book.”

Another wrote: “Looking forward to reading it, a memoir with a difference.”

Whilst one commented: “Gorgeous place…can’t wait to walk there one day and can’t wait to read your story.”

On the journey, Sam hikes 100miles from his home to the base of the highest mountain in the UK, Ben Nevis, and “attempts” to climb it.

Fitness fanatic Sam is no stranger to a challenge and is looking forward to sharing this new adventure with his followers.

He added: “Waypoints is a memoir with a difference. I wanted to tell the stories and share the experiences that have shaped me, but to do that I needed to challenge myself and spend some time in my own company, away from the distractions of everyday life. And for me there’s no better place to reflect than in the wild Scottish Highlands.”

Back in June last year, the Outlander actor and his co-star Graham McTavish announced a follow-up to their incredibly popular Clandlands book.

The book, the Clanlands Almanac, much like their first book, follows their adventures around Scotland.

The two Scottish actors wrote their original piece as a companion to hit show Men in Kilts during the first lockdown, after they were forced to take a break in filming.

This finding is unexpected because the plate tectonic regime of our planet progressively recycles crustal material via large-scale mantle convection at much smaller time scales. Therefore, it has been assumed that vestiges of early geological processes on Earth can only be found as analogues, on other terrestrial planets (Mercury, Venus, and Mars), asteroids, or the Moon. However, according to their study ‘Long-term preservation of Hadean protocrust in Earth’s mantle’, which has recently appeared in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), magmatic rocks that erupted throughout Earth’s history can still carry signatures that provide detailed information about the nature of the first crust, its long-term preservation in a graveyard in the lower-most mantle, and its resurrection via younger volcanism.

For their study, the geologists investigated up to 3.55 billion years old rocks from southern Africa. The analysis of these rocks revealed small anomalies in the isotope composition of the element tungsten (W). The origin of these isotope anomalies, namely the relative abundance of 182W, relates to geological processes that must have occurred immediately after the formation of the Earth more than 4.5 billion years ago.

Model calculations by the authors show that the observed 182W isotope patterns are best explained by the recycling of Earth’s earliest crust into mantle material that ascends via plumes from the lower mantle to generate lavas erupting at Earth’s surface. Intriguingly, the study shows that similar isotope patterns can be observed in distinct types of modern volcanic rocks (ocean island basalts), which demonstrates that Earth’s earliest crust is still buried in the lowermost mantle.

‘We assume that the lower layers of the crust — or the roots of the primordial continents — became heavier than their surroundings due to a geological maturation process and therefore sank into the Earth’s underlying mantle. Similar to a lava lamp,’ geochemist Dr Jonas Tusch from the University of Cologne’s Institute of Geology and Mineralogy remarked. ‘This fascinating insight provides a geochemical fingerprint of the young Earth, allowing us to better understand how large continents formed over the history of our planet. It also explains how our current, oxygen-rich atmosphere evolved — setting the stage for the origin of complex life,’ Dr Elis Hoffmann of Freie Universität Berlin added.

The geochemical fingerprint of the early Earth can also be compared with findings about other planets obtained during space missions. For example, data from Mars missions and studies of Martian meteorites show that Mars still has a very old surface due to the lack of plate tectonics, and that its composition may correspond to that of the young Earth.
