RIO DE JANEIRO, Jun 16 (TerraViva) After several long months of hard bargaining and protracted negotiations, the 193-member Preparatory Committee (PrepCom) drafting a blueprint for a green economy and sustainable development ran true to form, ending its discussions in a predictable stalemate.
With little or no significant progress on the final outcome document titled “The Future We Want”, the continued deadlock on key issues – including financing and technology transfer – was confirmed late Friday night.
As befits tradition, Brazil, as the country hosting the conference, takes over the negotiations and is expected to produce a text which has to be finally approved by consensus by all 193 member states.
Brazil is expected to hold consultations with the various groups with a new Monday night deadline.
The delegates involved in the negotiations have said they will not be available for discussions after Monday because their heads of state and heads of government will start arriving in Rio Jun. 19. The three-day summit begins Jun. 20.
